Books on Antiques

The links below connect you to lists of books, with our comments and recommendations. The books can be ordered while you are online.

If you're trying to identify an item as to manufacturer, date, useful facts, approximate value, etc., specialty books are most useful. We maintain a library of 80-100 specialty books to help us with our business. In the books, prices can be inflated or sometimes well under the market. They are useful for getting an idea for where any item is in relation to other items in that same field. You can tell from the pricing structure whether an item is common, hard to find, or rare, and also gauge its desirability to other collectors.

General price guides can give you a feel for the market. However, it has been our experience that they are usually not a reflection of "today's" price. Even guides with updated prices are a reflection of what has been seen during the past year while information was being gathered. We wish we could buy merchandise for the prices we see in the guides, but it's usually not the case. Again, they are most useful for looking at relative values.
